Our guest Lucky Maisanye comes from Witbank in Mpumalanga province, South Africa’s coal mining region, where 83% of South African coal is and has been mined for more than 120 years! The presentation will be focusing on impacts of coal mining on the environment, the health of the people and the economy of South Africa.
Another focus will be the German role with banks, institutions and companies who are investing in coal in South Africa. Until 2006 South Africa was Germanys most important supplier of hard coal, in 2012 almost 8% of the coal burned in German power plants still came from South Africa, making it the number 4 supplier. Lucky Maisanye will present where German coal and electricity comes from and what its impacts are .

In his talk, he’ll show the short documentary „Bliss of Ignorance“ produced by Simon Waller for GroundWork and Friends oft the earth. „With experts predicting the creation of a „sick“ generation in the Mpumalanga region (which is home to 12 of the world’s largest power stations), this documentary looks at the impact of South Africa’s energy policy – particularly the support for Eskom’s coal-fired power stations – on public health.
Set against the wider climate change debate, The Bliss of Ignorance highlights how the mining and burning of coal affects the environment; polluting air and valuable water resources in a water-scarce country.“ – http://www.theblissofignorance.net/
